Cambodia Visa can be applied for and issued upon arrival at border. The fee is 30 USD, payable in USD cash only. Some bus companies charge an additional USD 5 service fee at the border for batch processing. Although e-visa is acceptable but passengers will be required to pay an additional US$2 for batch processing. It guarantees a smooth border crossing. Otherwise, you can go with the bus personnel to make the transaction yourselves.

Tips:
– Usually, the bus personnel will assist their passengers with the entry process. It’s not a very organized process at border so please follow with the group.
– If there are any locals ask to help you carry your luggage, they will expect US$1 per bag. Please aware and carry your luggage by your own.
– Always keep a lookout for the bus personnel or fellow travellers from your bus if you don’t want to get lost.

Probably best known for the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (housed in the former S21 Prison) and the Choeung Ek Genocidal Center (also known as The Killing Fields), Phnom Penh has a long and tumultuous history. But these days it is actually one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-evolving cities with trendy microbars and health food cafes springing up just blocks away from traditional markets and ancient temples.

After spending a few days exploring Phnom Penh, you’re likely heading north to Siem Reap and the famous temples of Angkor Wat. Siem Reap is quieter and easier to navigate than the hectic Phnom Penh. But with over 2.6 million tourists annually, there is no shortage of things to do in Siem Reap.

If you’re on a budget, then the best way to travel between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap is by tourist bus. The trip takes ~6 hours depending on traffic and will cost you less than $20 per person. There are dozens of bus companies that offer this route in Cambodia, and it’s a surprisingly comfortable (and affordable) way to travel.

Tourist bus companies like Giant Ibis have reclining seats, power outlets, and air-con that actually works. They also advertise free Wifi (but it’s rare that any buses in Southeast Asia actually have working Wifi).

Just beware of booking with cheaper bus companies as you’ll almost certainly regret your decision. They tend to have older buses and are notorious for breakdowns, overcrowding, and unexplained delays.

We highly recommended spending just a few dollars more and booking with a bus company that has a solid safety record and good customer reviews. The most popular bus companies are Giant Ibis, Mekong Express, Virak Buntham Express, and Mey Hong Transport.

Unfortunately, there is no main bus station in Phnom Penh that all these buses use. Instead, each company has its own bus station or transportion office.

Most buses provide a free pickup service at your hotel if you book in advance. But be sure to note the location when booking if free pick-up isn’t available.

While most tourist buses bound for Siem Reap depart Phnom Penh in the early morning or late afternoon, there are also a few overnight bus options. The overnight buses leave Phnom Penh at 11:00-11:30pm and arrive in Siem Reap around 4:00-5:00 in the morning.

This option saves you the cost of one night’s accommodation, but you’ll be absolutely exhausted for your first day in Siem Reap. We don’t recommend the overnight bus for such a short trip, but you can make your own choice. How to Get bus from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap

Be sure you tell your Siem Reap accommodation which bus you’ll be arriving on before leaving Phnom Penh. Many Siem Reap hotels and guesthouses will arrange a free tuk-tuk to pick you up.

Most of the time you don’t really have to buy a minibus ticket in advance due to the number of companies and departures for this route, but we still recommend booking online if you want to ensure you have a seat at a specific time rather than waiting at the bus station for the next available departure.

It seems like every minibus company has a different drop-off point in Siem Reap, so it’s best to ask the staff for the specific drop-off location, especially if you are arranging a ride with your accommodation.

Some of the bus companies that offered transportation from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Pehn are not currently available, but we expect they will resume routes in the future. The distance between Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh is just 140 miles (~225 kilometers), and despite the international border crossing, it’s a relatively straightforward trip.

The fastest way to travel from HCMC to Phnom Penh is by flight which takes just 50 minutes. Of course, it’s also the most expensive way. And when you consider the time you’ll need to travel to the airport and check in for your flight, the time savings are actually minimal.

How to get bus from Ho Chi Minh to Phnom Penh – Thai Duong Airbus Limousine

If you’ve decided not to fly, then the most common way (and our preferred method) to travel from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh is to take a tourist bus. Taking a bus is not only the most affordable option, it is relatively quick, comfortable, and convenient.

The bus trip generally takes ~6.5 hours but can take longer depending on traffic and how busy the border is when you arrive.

There are a few bus companies that offer this route, including Thai Duong Limousine , Giant Ibis, Mekong Express, Sapaco Limousine and Sorya Express . We recommend Thai Doung Limousine – it’s our favorite bus company that runs this route because they are super reliable and always comfortable.

The price of a bus ticket ranges from $20– $28. There are a few buses in the 10-dollar range, but it’s definitely worth paying a few dollars more to go with a reputable bus company.

As previously stated, we recommend Thai Dương Airbus Limousine bus  – a ticket is just $28. They have reasonably comfortable buses with functioning air-conditioning. The buses are relatively quiet without the absurdly loud music or movies that many Southeast Asian busses insist on playing. And if you’re lucky, you may even have an outlet for charging your electronics! They often advertise free Wi-Fi, but it rarely works.

Pretty much all of the tourist bus companies depart Ho Chi Minh City from 302 Cong Hoa , Pham Ngu Lau Street which is the northern border of the backpacker area surrounding Bui Vien Street.

If you want to take the Thai Duong Limousine bus, it is important that you book your ticket a few days in advance as they only have one departure each day.

Many bus companies offer a free pick-up service, although if you’re staying close to Bui Vien Street this just means a bus company employee will walk with you from your hotel to the bus stop. You will probably even have to carry all your luggage which kind of defeats the purpose of a free pick-up.
